Phil Foden has sent Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany a heartfelt message on his Instagram after it was announced the defender will leave the Etihad and become player-manager at Belgian side Anderlecht.
Kompany played the full 90 minutes as Man City defeated Watford 6-0 in the Fa Cup final yesterday but it has now been confirmed that the 33-year-old will leave after 11 years with the club.
Phil Foden reacted to the news of Kompany’s departure and left the Belgian a touching message.
“Looked after me from day one. Led by example, showed everyone what it means to be a leader, wear their heart on their sleeve, and give everything to this club,” said Foden via his personal Instagram account.
“We will miss you Captain.”

Kompany is without doubt a Manchester City legend and now is the right time for the defender to depart. The veteran has been sensational and has been a role model for every City player – Foden will have learnt a lot from the defender. Kompany’s attitude and professionalism has been second to none and he deserves high praise because of this reason alone. The 33-year-old’s presence in and around the squad has been invaluable and he will be sorely missed on and off the pitch by everyone at the club. There should be little doubt that Kompany will be a success in coaching and management, his new role at Anderlecht is perfect and the Belgian club will only benefit from having him. A return to Anderlecht is ideal for Kompany and it’s a club he knows well – he spent three years with the Belgian outfit and now he is able to carve out a career in the management side of the game. It wouldn’t be surprising to see Kompany return to the Etihad one day in some capacity.
