Newcastle attacker Ayoze Perez has said that he is “proud” to have finished as the club’s top scorer in successive seasons.

The Spanish striker took his tally for the season to 13 – one more than he managed last term – with a goal in the 4-0 thrashing of Fulham on Sunday.

The 25-year-old is one of two Magpies players to have reached double figures for the season, with on-loan striker Salomon Rondon netting 12 times in all competitions.

“It’s something to be proud of – two years in a row, being the top goalscorer for the club is something that makes me proud of myself,” Perez told the Newcastle Chronicle.

“And, obviously, to be able to win against Fulham, end the season on a high, and get a better position, finishing 13th.”

OPINION

It really has been a great season in front of goal for Newcastle’s attackers. To have two players reach double figures for the season is fantastic, but there’s more to it than that. Perez has gone one better than last season – a clear improvement – while Rondon is enjoying his best-ever season in front of goal in English football. While Newcastle have not managed to reach the top 10 as they did last year, they should ignore that fact because they’ve actually managed one more point – 45 – than they got last year. It shows that the standard has improved this year, but one more point is still a solid improvement and manager Rafael Benitez will not be displeased about that at all. In all, to have 25 goals between two players for a side normally in the bottom half of the table is fantastic and it shows how important the duo of Perez and Rondon have become to Newcastle.
