Pat Nevin has bemoaned the actions of Tottenham defender Juan Foyth, after the Argentine’s strong challenge on Bournemouth’s Jack Simpson during Spurs’ 1-0 defeat at Bournemouth on Saturday.

Foyth had only been on the field for around two minutes, having replaced Toby Alderweireld at the start of the second half. However, with one of his first involvements in the game he produced a poor sliding challenge on Bournemouth’s Simpson, and was sent off leaving Tottenham down to nine men, with Son Heung-min already shown red just before the break.

BBC pundit Nevin expressed his disapproval of the challenge on BBC Radio 5 Live, which can be seen on the 5 Live Twitter page, saying, “You can end people’s career with stupid challenges like that. I know he was excited but it’s a horrible thing to do!”

Nevin added: “Do not even begin to argue about that Foyth – I don’t care if you did not catch the player. You do not go into a tackle like that. That is a vile challenge. So get off! Horrible challenge”

OPINION

Pat Nevin is right to criticise the challenge made by Juan Foyth that saw him sent off against Bournemouth in Tottenham’s 1-0 defeat. The Argentine, perhaps a little too eager to impress having just come on for Toby Alderweireld, lunged in rashly on Bournemouth’s Jack Simpson and although he did not make contact, he could well have injured the young Bournemouth player had he done. Foyth’s challenge somewhat demonstrated the lack of calmness on display by a Tottenham side, who could have guaranteed a Champions League place for next season with a win on the South Coast. However, instead Mauricio Pochettino’s side endured a frustrating afternoon, with Son Heung-Min also sent off in the first half, meaning he will miss Tottenham’s final Premier League match of the season as well as Foyth next weekend. Tottenham supporters will hope that their recent blip can be halted before the end of the season as they look to secure a top four position.
