For Aston Villa fans, this will be a day to savour for quite some time.

How can you even begin to put into words the relief and the elation they must be feeling after having seen their side overcome a nervy last few moments to beat Derby County 2-1 at Wembley and return to the Premier League?

After a fairly indifferent start to the season under Steve Bruce, which saw them sack the manager back in October as they languished 12th in the Championship table, they have come alive under boyhood fan Dean Smith, and a run of 10 wins in the latter stages of the campaign ensured not only their place in the play-offs, but also their status as the form team going into them.

And they have made good on their promising run with a trio of performances that have finally got them back up to the top flight after three years away.

It is the least they deserve, and it is a sentiment being echoed around the footballing world.

Even players and pundits who have nothing to do with Villa are taking the time to congratulate them.

Take Michael Owen, for example.

The one-time Ballon d’Or winner took to Twitter straight after the match to say:  “Congratulations to Aston Villa.

“A massive club and back where they belong in the Premier League”.

You have to say that he has hit the nail on the head.

Villa are, historically, one of the biggest clubs in England. They have the fanbase, the stadium, and the legacy to be competing with the likes of Everton and West Ham in top half of the Premier League table.

Now, after a period of suffering, they have the chance to do exactly that again.
