Newcastle United youngster Dan Barlaser is being lined up by Championship side Wigan Athletic, according to Chronicle Live.

The 22-year-old enjoyed a successful spell in League one with Accrington Stanley last term and his performances have not gone unnoticed.

Wigan boss Paul Cook is plotting a loan deal for Barlaser but he will face competition from fellow Championship outfit Preston.

According to the Chronicle, the Magpies will look to extend the midfielder’s deal before loaning him out to the Championship – his current deal runs out in 2020.

Barlaser made 39 appearances in League One last term and a step-up to the Championship could now be on the cards.

Good move for Newcastle?

A Championship loan move for Barlaser is good news for Newcastle. The second tier is a demanding league which is full of strong teams and Barlaser will be gain a lot of experience from playing at such a level. The youngster is clearly talented so agreeing a new contract is essential as Newcastle prepare for the future. Sean Longstaff enjoyed a successful breakthrough season under Rafa Benitez and Barlaser could do the same in the near future if he is able to prove his worth in the Championship. The move makes sense and would benefit all parties involved.

Likely to happen?

It’s very likely that Barlaser will depart on loan this summer. Once the Magpies are able to extend his deal they can then use the loan deal to help him with his development and we believe that is what they will do. The Turkey youth international is attracting interest from more than one Championship side and we think that’s the perfect move – we think this one will happen.
