Newcastle are planning to move for on-loan Aston Villa striker Tammy Abraham, according to the Northern Echo.

The newspaper says that the Magpies will rekindle their interest in the 21-year-old, who has been a club target since the summer of 2017, on one condition and that is if Villa lose the play-off final.

However Chelsea could look to keep Abraham at Stamford Bridge if their transfer ban is upheld.

Abraham has lit up the Championship this season, finishing as the joint second-highest scorer in the regular season with 25 goals before adding a 26th via a penalty against West Brom in the play-off semi-finals.

Good move for Newcastle?

Definitely. In his previous spell in the Premier League with Swansea City, he did not pull up trees in the slightest as the South Wales club were relegated. But after this latest stint in the second tier, the England Under-21 international looks sharp and more ready than ever for Premier League football. He would certainly add goals to this Newcastle side, which has doubts over the futures of star men such as Salomon Rondon and Ayoze Perez. If one – or both – of these players go this summer, Abraham would be a fantastic replacement.

Likely to happen?

Probably not. If Villa go up, the Northern Echo report says that Dean Smith’s side will be able to fend off interest from other clubs, assuming that Chelsea do not want him back after his stellar season. If the Blues do want him back, that changes everything. If the transfer ban imposed against them is upheld, Maurizio Sarri’s side would be very reluctant to let him go, meaning that neither Villa nor Newcastle would have a chance. As it stands, Newcastle are mere outsiders in the race to sign Abraham.
