Newcastle United have joined the race to sign Swansea hot-shot Daniel James, according to Wales Online

A number of top-flight clubs, including the likes of Liverpool and Manchester United, were said to have registered their interest in the 21-year-old Wales international. However, Wales Online claims that’s not true but that the Magpies are interested in bringing the young starlet to St. James’ Park.

No concrete offer has been made by any club for James – except for Leeds in the January window – and his deal is due to expire with the Swans at the end of next season leaving him up for grabs at the right price.

James has been one of Swansea’s best performers this season in the Championship, scoring four and assisting nine. James’ performances were rewarded with international recognition, he made two appearances for Wales, scoring once.

Man City and Everton were also mentioned as possible destinations for the talented youngster.

Good move for Newcastle?

Daniel James is one of the brightest – and fastest – young talents in British football right now, and any club that is able to secure his signature could have a star on their hands. The attacker lit-up the Liberty Stadium in the second-half of last term and at such a tender age, he is only going to get better and better. If Newcastle are able to provide James with vital experience, he could make a significant impact next season. James’ dribbling ability and creativity could make a huge difference to a Newcastle side that could do with an injection of enthusiasm.

Is it likely?

There are no guarantees in regards to the budget that Rafa Benitez will have this summer. Clarification is needed from owner Mike Ashley to allow Benitez to operate sufficiently. With other big clubs circling and expressing their interest in James, the Magpies must act quickly and show signs of intent. Due to the fact that so many clubs are keen, it looks unlikely that Newcastle will make advancements.
