Newcastle United and Wolves are in pursuit of Huddersfield midfielder Aaron Mooy after the Yorkshire club suffered relegated this season, according to The World Game.

The reliable Australian news outlet claimed via their website that Mooy, 28, was once valued at £41million by the Terriers, but his price-tag has since been slashed all the way down to £14.8million since relegation from the Premier League was confirmed.

It is understood that the Australia international looks certain to leave Huddersfield in the summer as owner Phil Hodgkinson cannot afford to keep hold of the ex-Manchester City midfielder in the Championship.

Good move for Newcastle?

Rafa Benitez, if he remains in charge at St James’ Park, will surely need to sign a new central midfielder or two in the summer due to speculation surrounding the futures of Isaac Hayden, Jonjo Shelvey and Sean Longstaff.

If any of them were to leave then they would need to be replaced and Mooy would certainly be a good replacement.

Although Huddersfield were relegated this term, the 28-year-old was one of their best players as he made 30 appearances in all competitions and scored three goals.

He should fit in well at St James’ Park and his £14.8million price-tag seems pretty fair for an international player in the peak years of his career.

Likely to happen?

Newcastle will have to do well to beat Wolves in pursuit of Mooy’s signature as the Midlands club has qualified for next season’s Europa League and could be a more attractive place to go at the moment.

However if the Magpies are sold by Mike Ashley to an Arabian billionaire, things might just turn in the Tyneside club’s favour.
