Steven Gerrard has met with Rennes defender Mexer and the Mozambique international is now considering whether to jet out to Glasgow this weekend to watch Rangers play Celtic at Ibrox, according to the Daily Record.

The newspaper claims that the 30-year-old’s contract with the Ligue 1 club will expire at the end of the season and as he is suspended for this weekend’s match against Guingamp, he could take a seat in the directors’ box at Ibrox for the Old Firm on Sunday.

It is understood that Mexer’s agent Laurent Schmitt is in London and could join the centre-back in Glasgow this weekend.

The Daily Record has also uploaded an image with Gerrard and Mexer, who is looking as though he will leave Rennes once his contract expires despite them wanting him to stay.

Good move for Rangers?

Mexer has been very impressive for Rennes this season, appearing 41 times across all competitions and scoring two goals.

The former Sporting CP centre-back has played in the Europa League and helped Rennes with the French Cup against Paris Saint-Germain last month by scoring in the final.

Gerrard will need to bolster his defence in the summer transfer window with Gareth McAuley’s contract expiring soon and Joe Worrall returning to Nottingham Forest at the end of his loan.

Mexer is experienced, has played a lot at the top level and would be available for free.

It’s a no-brainer.

Likely to happen?

It does look as though Gerrard has definitely held talks with Mexer as the Daily Record as shared a picture of the pair together.

The defender does seem to be keen on joining Rangers and if he does decide to go to the Old Firm on Sunday then the move will look a lot more likely to happen.
