BBC Sportsound pundit Tam McManus has slammed Celtic loanee Oliver Burke, dubbing him a “woeful” signing.

McManus was writing in his column for FootballScotland after the 2-0 defeat suffered by Celtic in the Old Firm clash at Ibrox on Sunday.

He said that Rangers were “tantalisingly close” to Celtic and ending the season the stronger team.

He said mistakes had been made by Celtic in the transfer market, not least letting John McGinn slip through their hands.

“Guys like Oliver Burke,Timothy Weah, Jeremy Toljan, Youssef Mulumbu and Jack Hendry have all been brought in and made absolutely no impact,” McManus wrote.

“Burke in particular has been a woeful signing.”

He said the “serious mistakes” made by Celtic couldn’t happen again this summer and added “Celtic got away with it this season to an extent. They won’t next season.”

OPINION

Burke – on a reported £30k-a-week – was probably the worst player on the pitch on Sunday and that’s saying a lot when there were so many Celtic players who were dreadful, like Scott Brown. Burke has been a massive flop for Celtic since arriving on loan from West Brom and his career has taken a nosedive since signing for RB Leipzig for £13million from Nottingham Forest. He’ll be heading back to the Hawthorns after Celtic’s two final games of the season, both against Hearts in the Premiership and the cup final. Celtic fans won’t be sorry to see him go after another shocking performance in the hoops. McManus also right about it being a massive summer for Celtic. They were lucky that Rangers were so inconsistent this season and perhaps won’t be so fortunate next season as they carry on their hunt for 10-in-a-row. Nine could be an issue if they don’t bring in two or three quality players in over the summer.
