Celtic midfielder Callum McGregor has said that Celtic need “numbers and good quality” this summer if they are to maintain the standard they have set.

The Hoops clinched an unprecedented treble treble with victory over Hearts at Hampden Park on Saturday, Odsonne Edouard’s brace firing Neil Lennon’s side to a ninth successive trophy in all competitions.

Speaking to the Daily Record, McGregor also spoke of the mood in the Celtic camp after Neil Lennon was offered the permanent manager’s job at the club.

“We all jumped on top of him when we heard he’d been offered the job,” the 25-year-old said. “We just heard the news after the game. We put the Cup down, read it and then put the Cup back up again.

“We’re delighted for him. What a job he’s done and people probably don’t appreciate how well he’s done in terms of bringing stability.

“Guys like Scott Brown, Jonny Hayes and Mikael Lustig have helped as well and if we didn’t have so many good characters it could have fallen away and we wouldn’t be standing with the Treble.

“We need some numbers and good quality in the summer to help the lads who have soldiered on the last three months.”

OPINION

McGregor is right, Celtic do need some new additions in the summer. They could have a lot more than just Dedryck Boyata leaving the club, with the futures of the likes of Cristian Gamboa and Mikael Lustig not certain. If both of these players – as well as others – join Boyata in leaving, not only will it leave a gap in the squad but it will also leave a gap in the wage bill and increase the transfer kitty for the summer. Celtic may just have won the treble treble, but they cannot afford to rest easy. Rangers will have big things planned over the summer and will be hell-bent on closing the gap between themselves and their Glasgow rivals. In order for Celtic to keep ahead of Steven Gerrard’s side and continue to dominate Scottish football, they need to get busy in the transfer market and bring in some new additions that will not only freshen the squad up, but make sure that the standard they have set in the last three seasons does not drop.
