Ally McCoist has said that he thinks interim Celtic boss Neil Lennon will already know whether he will be kept on as the club’s permanent boss.

Lennon – who was successful for the Hoops as a player and in a previous managerial spell at Parkhead – was drafted in earlier in the season following the departure of Brendan Rodgers to Leicester City, and guided the club to the Premiership title.

The Glasgow club could wait until after the Scottish Cup final to announce an update on Lennon’s future, but according to McCoist, the interim boss probably knows by know what will happen.

“I would like to think, behind the scenes, Neil’s had the courtesy of being told what’s happening. I told you last time I was on, it’s a massive, massive summer, particularly for the Old Firm,” the pundit told talkSPORT‘s Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast [Monday, 9:35am].

“Obviously a lot of clubs will be doing business, but Rangers and Celtic in particular, I think, have got serious business.

“Probably particularly Celtic more than anybody, in terms of players coming in and out, so I would like to think that whoever’s going to get the job will probably know and I think Neil deserves that respect.

“I fully expect them to win the cup and complete the treble, so I think from Celtic’s point of view, I get it they 100% want to get the decision right to replace Brendan.

“But I would like to think that Neil knows what’s happening.”

OPINION

There is no doubt that Lennon has certainly done enough to warrant getting the full-time Celtic post. Apart from the 2-0 defeat to Rangers at Ibrox – the Hoops’ second defeat of the season on their neighbour’s ground – last weekend, the interim boss has hardly put a foot wrong. In fact, he was brought in to steady the ship and make sure that Celtic began what Rodgers has started – guiding the Hoops to yet another league title. On the whole, he has done that brilliantly, finishing nine points clear of the Gers. One defeat to their Old Firm rivals should not dictate his future. Besides, he could be the man that ends up leading Celtic to the treble treble if he can guide the Bhoys past Hearts for a second time in a week in the Scottish Cup final next Saturday. And what an achievement that would be if he can pull it off.
