Former Scotland international Ally McCoist has praised Aston Villa duo John McGinn and Tyrone Mings after their performances against Derby County on Monday.

The Villans prevailed 2-1 over Frank Lampard’s side in the Play Off final at Wembley, securing their long-awaited return to the Premier League. McCoist was impressed by two Villa stars on Monday, but particularly his fellow Scot.

“McGinn was the best player on the park second half, I thought he was outstanding,” he said on talkSPORT [28/05; 06:11].

However, McCoist also had some warm words for Villa’s imperious centre half: “I really like Mings at the back by the way, I really like him,” he finished.

OPINION

McCoist is absolutely spot on, here. McGinn was absolutely incredible at Wembley, getting through so much work and using the ball extremely effectively when he got it. He’s a terrific footballer and must go down as one of the finest signings of the Championship season. The fact that Dean Smith’s side – then managed by Steve Bruce, of course – were able to bring him in from Hibernian ahead of other teams was phenomenal. He’s been a cut above the second tier all season long and so it proved once again on Monday. There’s no way that the Villans would have secured promotion without him this campaign, but the same has to be said about Mings. The defender’s arrival on loan from Bournemouth in January must now be looked at as a pivotal moment in their season, and he was tremendous once again at Wembley. He is a bulldozer of a centre half and Smith will be hugely keen to sign him permanently this summer.
