Celtic legend Frank McAvennie has heaped praise on current star Callum McGregor.

The 25-year-old was nominated for the PFA Scotland Player of the Year award, but was beaten to the accolade by teammate James Forrest.

But McAvennie believes that the midfielder has been a shining light for the Hoops.

Speaking to the Scottish Sun, he said: “Callum has been the most consistent player over the course of the season.

“He has bags of talent and steps up to the plate when it matters most.

“And he’s still improving so I’m sure we haven’t seen the best of him yet.”

OPINION

McGregor has been sublime this season, and he is fully deserving of the praise that McAvennie is lavishing on him here. The quality he exudes from the centre of the park has been one of the key factors in helping Celtic reaffirm their dominance over the Scottish game this season, and the way he takes a match by the scruff of the neck is genuinely impressive. He is so good that the Hoops must be worried. It’s hard not to imagine McGregor tearing things up in the Premier League south of the border, and should he continue in his current form, he would surely be a target for any side looking to add a measure of class to their engine room. The key to McGregor’s success is how easy he makes it all look. You can tell, just from the way that he moves around the field, that he reads the game on a different level to those around him, and Celtic will be praying that they can keep a hold of him.
