TalkSPORT host Sam Matterface has suggested that Manchester United forward Romelu Lukaku could be the “missing piece” in Everton’s jigsaw.

The Belgian left the Toffees in 2017 for a fee in excess of £75 million, but has struggled for form at Old Trafford of late.

A report from Gazzetta dello Sport in Italy has suggested that Inter Milan could be looking to make a player plus cash offer to take him to the San Siro, but Matterface believes that Everton should be taking an interest in him too.

Speaking on talkSPORT (May 23rd, 4.05pm), he said: “He [Lukaku] could be the missing piece of their jigsaw.”

OPINION

As nice as it might be for Everton fans to fantasise about, this is never going to happen, and the reasoning is twofold. On the one hand, the amount of money it would take for the Blues to take Lukaku back to Goodison Park would be extortionate, and surely far beyond anything even they would be willing to pay. The other main factor is that Lukaku himself probably wouldn’t go back. To return to Everton, so soon after leaving and with so much damage done to his reputation, would surely be seen as failure on his part. His pride would prevent him from going back any time in the near future, which is a shame, because you can’t help feeling that he could do a real job on Merseyside again. With a side geared towards supplying him with the right kind of service, and with his confidence restored, this is a player who could still be a real handful. The chances are, unfortunately, he won’t be a handful at Everton.
