Gary Lineker has sent Liverpool a Twitter message after the final games of the Premier League played out on Sunday afternoon.

Liverpool won 2-0 but Man City won the title after coming out on top of Brighton – they won 4-1 despite going a goal down.

Lineker congratulated Man City but had a message for Liverpool too saying, “To finish second on 97 points with only one defeat is extraordinary. A simply magnificent season.”

OPINION

This was one of the best Premier League races of all time and neither side deserved to lose. Liverpool fans had hope when Brighton took the lead but it only took seconds for Man City to equalise and there was only going to be one winner after that. Man City are out of the Champions League and losing the title as well would have been cruel to the players and Pep Guardiola. They’ve got the FA Cup final to look forward to. Meanwhile, Liverpool will have to put this disappointment behind them because they’ve got a massive chance to land possibly the biggest prize of the season, the Champions League. That’s the least they deserve after a season where they’ve thrilled and gained a load more fans with Klopp’s brilliant football. Liverpool’s hunt for a first Premier League title goes on but they’ve been sensational this season and surely the trophy can’t be too far away under Klopp.
