OPINION

Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder has labelled himself “old school” and blamed alcohol for the interview in which he called two Leeds players “muppets”.

Wilder gave the interview in the aftermath of his side winning promotion to the Premier League, and hit out at Patrick Bamford and Adam Forshaw who had both taken digs at United. He said there was “nothing personal” in the comments and said he wouldn’t bet against Leeds coming up via the play-offs.

Some Leeds fans aren’t in the mood for forgiving him yet. And there’s a saying that says winners should “get it quietly”. Forshaw and Bamford didn’t really say anything out of the ordinary, both just pointing out that the pressure might get to Sheffield United. That’s pretty standard mind games fare.

Alcohol is a pretty poor excuse too. If you’re going to drink as a public figure you’ve got to be able to act responsibly. Saying you’re “old school” isn’t really a way out. If you’re going to drink – and we wouldn’t begrudge anyone a couple after getting promoted – just don’t give an interview until you’ve sobered up. Let’s remember, Sheffield United were promoted, Leeds players are gutted. Being called “muppets” is the last thing they would have wanted but it will give extra spice to the fixture if they do get up next season via the play-offs.
