It’s not every day that a Qatari government-backed investment group are reported as having an interest in your club. For most fans, it is a dream, but that dream took one step closer to becoming a reality for Leeds United supporters on Saturday night. According to the Financial Times, the same filthy rich billionaires who own PSG are keen to make a foray into the English game, and see Elland Road as a preferable destination. Naturally, Leeds Twitter went into meltdown. After the doom and gloom of a failed promotion campaign, suddenly there was talk of Lionel Messi, Neymar and Cristiano Ronaldo rocking up in Yorkshire from hopeful fans. Sometimes, however, you should be careful what you wish for. Having money would be nice, of course, but when it is money from dubious means, and when it potentially threatens the identity of the club, you have to ask whether it is truly the best thing. Look at the way PSG and Manchester City have morphed into corporate brands instead of football clubs. They have become tourist destinations, and you can’t imagine that kind of soulless football sitting well at Elland Road. That being said, ask any City fans if they’re bothered about how they got to be the biggest team in the country, and you can only expect one response. Perhaps it is easy to overlook the pitfalls when the carrot at the end of the stick is so juicy.
