Portsmouth’s defeat to Sunderland in the League One play-offs on Thursday led to a clip from earlier this season being dug up on Twitter that had Pompey fans singing about being promoted and Southampton being relegated.

After the 0-0 draw at Fratton Park on Thursday night, Portsmouth were resigned to yet another season in League One while Southampton will remain in the Premier League after a revival in the second-half of the campaign under charge of the Ralph Hasenhuttl.

Saints legend Matt Le Tissier has since taken to his personal Twitter account after seeing the clip of the Portsmouth fans singing “Pomey’s going up and the scum are going down” resurface.

“Whoops,” he said in a one-word response.

OPINION

How embarrassing for Portsmouth fans. There some horrible scenes at Fratton Park on Thursday night when a fan appeared to kick out at Sunderland’s Luke O’Nien when he fell into the crowd, but they have also been ridiculed on social media for this chant that they were doing earlier this season when Southampton were in trouble. Maybe they should learn to hold their tongue a bit in the future because they are still two tiers below their south coast rivals and have a lot of work to do to get back near to them to play them once again. Hopefully it does happen though because the south coast derby is always a great match and the contrasting fortunes of the two clubs in the last decade would make it a massive spectacle. Portsmouth should really have gone up this season via the top-two in League One, but there has been enough from them to suggest that they should get promoted next year instead. Southampton have started to go backwards and they have to be discussed when you think of teams who could get relegated from the 2019/20 Premier League.
