Simon Jordan has said that he would be feeling pretty bitter if he was a Leeds fan, after they crashed out of the play-off semi-final at Elland Road.

Leeds lost 4-2 to Derby after beating them 1-0 at Pride Park and Jordan said that Leeds were in control and should have won through to the play-off final easily.

Talking on the Jim White Show (talkSPORT, Thursday, 11.30am) Jordan delivered a seven-word verdict that will make Leeds fans even more gloomy today.

He said, Leeds “Snatched defeat from the jaws of victory” and went on to say that the club must keep hold of manager Marcelo Bielsa for next season.

OPINION

This is more than fair. When Leeds scored the first goal of the game at Elland Road it seemed they had at least one foot in the play-off final. They were totally in control at that point after having to stem an early wave from Derby, but a horrific mistake between Kiko Casilla and Liam Cooper gifted Jack Marriott a goal and that gave Derby fresh impetus. The second-half started badly for Leeds as Derby took a very early lead through Mason Mount before another mistake from Cooper gave Derby a penalty. Harry Wilson despatched that and Marriott scored late on after Gaetano Berardi was sent off. It’s not controversial to say that mistakes cost Leeds a place in the shootout for the Premier League in a season where they deserved to go up automatically. Football can be a very cruel game but for the Leeds players it’s time for a holiday and another tilt at promotion next season – hopefully with Bielsa in charge.
