Young forward Niall Huggins has signed a new professional deal with Leeds United, it has been confirmed.

Leeds announced via their official Twitter account and official website on Wednesday that Huggins, 18, has agreed terms to sign a one-year deal that extends his stay at Elland Road until the end of next season.

Huggins is not the only young Leeds player to sign professional terms this week with Theo Hudson also agreeing a new contract on Monday.

OPINION

It remains to be seen whether or not Huggins will ever break into Leeds senior squad, but as long as Marcelo Bielsa is in charge, there is a good chance of it happening. Huggins was in top form for the Under-18s last season by scoring 12 goals in 29 matches and hopefully he can continue that form next season when he is playing for Carlos Corberan’s Under-23s. Huggins has also been spotted by Wales’ youth set up in the last few months as he trained with their Under-21s side in the last international break. If the 18-year-old is catching the eye of both his international team and his club then that is surely a good sign about him. Maybe Huggins can follow in the footsteps of Jack Clarke and Jamie Shackleton by claiming a spot in the first team next season. If Leeds don’t spend much money in the summer then it’s possible.
