Niall Horan has responded to a brutal put-down from the official Leeds United Twitter account after the Championship play-offs.

Horan, a former member of One Direction and a Derby County fan, revealed he was at the play-off final where his side were beaten 2-1 by Aston Villa.

After the game, in the latest in a long-running feud, Leeds tweeted “Hopefully you performed better than Derby! See you next season! #StopCrying.”

Horan responded on Monday night with a six-word message that showed he was still full of fight: “Leeds were good at Wembley today.”

OPINION

This is a Twitter feud that shows no signs of abating, although after a five-hour wait we were expecting something a bit more creative from Horan. Derby missed out on the chance to get into the Premier League at Wembley, beaten 2-1 by worthy winners Aston Villa, and for Leeds fans, yesterday’s play-off final must have been torture to watch. Derby played from inside a shell until they were two goals down and only really came alive in the last 15 minutes. Leeds fans will know their side would have put up a much better show against Aston Villa and there would have been nothing from either side that would have scared them. That’s in the past though. Next season is all about the Championship for both Leeds and Derby, though, and the rivalry on the pitch, as well as off it, will get a chance to develop more as both sides look to escape from one of the world’s toughest leagues. We’re expecting to see more tweets between Horan and Leeds as the season goes on.
