Leeds United could struggle to negotiate a new contract for top goalscorer Kemar Roofe, according to journalist Phil Hay.

The Yorkshire Evening Post writer, on his personal Twitter account, will have put doubt into the minds of the Leeds faithful with his fear that a new deal for Kemar Roofe could be difficult after giving an update on key members of the squads current contracts.

Hay worrying wrote: “Roofe could be a difficult one though”.

This will come as bad news for Leeds fans with their top-scorer, Roofe, possibly not agreeing to a new deal after his best season at Elland Road. Marcelo Bielsa has not had the luxury of playing both his strikers consistently with both Roofe and Patrick Bamford both picking up injuries throughout the campaign.

Hay also confirmed that the club will try to work out new deals for key duo Liam Cooper and Kalvin Phillips in the summer.

OPINION

This could well and truly turn into devastating news for all involved at Leeds. Kemar Roofe has been excellent this season under Marcelo Bielsa, who has transformed the forward’s game to make a much bigger threat for opposition teams. The 26-year-old enjoyed his best year in-front of goal, scoring 14 goals in 32 appearances for Leeds after finally getting his chance to lead the line at Elland Road, something he has failed to do in his time since arriving in 2016 from Oxford. His runs off the ball and his ability to hold off defenders, allowing his fellow forwards to get in and around him has seen him improve tenfold into one of the best strikers the Championship has to offer. Should Leeds want to challenge once again for promotion next season, it is vital that they retain their best players and Kemar Roofe should definitely be one that gets a new deal, regardless of his demands.
