Mark Hateley believes that Rangers should only sell forward Alfredo Morelos if they receive a large fee this summer.

Morelos has been a key figure for Rangers in Steven Gerrard’s first season in charge at Ibrox, with the striker scoring 18 goals and registering four assists for the Gers in the SPFL this campaign.

However, the 22-year-old has been linked with a move away from Ibrox this summer, with Gerrard already looking at potential replacements and preparing to sell the striker according to TEAMtalk.

Hateley though claims that Rangers will be fine regardless of whether Morelos remains a player for the club next season, but that the club should look to receive a large fee if he moves on.

“Whether Alfredo stays or goes it is a win-win situation for Rangers. It’s a great problem to have and it’s not a problem we’ve had recently. You always want to keep players who score goals,” Hateley said as quoted by Football Scotland.

“It depends whether that number is the right number because everyone has a right number. What would my right number be for Morelos? I wouldn’t like to say but it would be top dollar. Looking at him right now I see a goal scorer with a lot of potential.

“Alfredo missed too many games this season but he’ll learn from it, like we all did at 21 or 22. You do daft things and get into trouble on the field. But you learn from it. He has all the tools to be a top player. Clubs will be looking at him and thinking this player will have a big career.”

OPINION

Hateley is probably right to suggest that Rangers would be rewarded either way whether Morelos remains at the club, or if he is sold this summer. However, if the striker is sold it would be difficult for Gerrard to find a replacement for him, with the 22-year-old’s goals and general game play a huge outlet for Rangers. As Hateley suggests there will probably be a host of clubs looking to make a potential move for Morelos this summer, and Gerrard might have to start to looking for a replacement swiftly if he is to be sold. Rangers would likely be wanting to receive a large fee for the forward, as Hateley states, and despite Morelos’ problems with discipline at times during his time at Ibrox he will still have suitors monitoring his situation with the club. If Morelos does leave this summer it will be imperative that Gerrard is given the finds from the sale to invest in a suitable replacement and then Hateley belief that the club will be ok will be proven correct.
