Ruud Gullit has pulled no punches in his assessment of Tottenham’s performance against Ajax on Tuesday night.

Spurs were soundly beaten 1-0 by the Dutch side, and never really threatened to create anything in terms of a goalscoring threat.

And Gullit was quick to express his astonishment at the poor performances of three players in particular.

Speaking on beIN Sports, as quoted in the Daily Mail, he said: “For me, a lot of players were disappointing because I see them every week in the Premier League.

“Dele Alli, oh my god, technically wise so bad. Wanyama, my god, technically wise, Rose too.

“Like I said I see them every week and how is it possible to make so many mistakes? I know you’re under pressure but you need to know what to do and they didn’t.”

OPINION

Gullit could have picked any Spurs player who played last night and you couldn’t really have argued with his criticism. This was certainly a night to forget for a beleaguered Tottenham side. As soon as the lineups were announced and you saw that bench, with Moussa Sissoko the most attacking option on it, you knew that this was going to be an uphill battle for the hosts. Things weren’t made much better when they were forced into a change following Jan Verthongen’s head injury, but at least for a while it looked as if the introduction of Sissoko might provide a bit of a foothold in the centre of the park. Those hopes proved to be short-lived, and in part it was due to a fundamental lack of quality on the ball. Passes went stray, runs were missed, and all in all, you had to wonder how Spurs, even without their star men, had managed to get as far as this in Europe. Much improvement is needed in Amsterdam next week.
