David Gold has claimed that “time will tell” whether or not Jack Wilshere will turn out to be a good acquisition for West Ham.

Wilshere, 27, joined the Hammers on a free transfer from Arsenal last summer and according to the Daily Mail, the Irons decided to hand the midfielder a deal worth £100,000-a-week.

The England international only managed eight appearances for West Ham in his debut season at the London Stadium due to yet more injury issues, and that led a supporter to hit out at Gold on Twitter, claiming that it was “awful business” to sign the central midfielder.

However Gold has offered his backing to Wilshere via his personal Twitter account on Friday.

“Time will tell,” said the West Ham co-chairman.

OPINION

Wilshere has not been a good signing for West Ham so far. It was widely predicted that he would continue to suffer from the injury issues that have plagued his career at Arsenal, but there is no doubt that the playmaker has a lot of quality that is just waiting to be showcased in claret and blue in the Premier League. Hopefully he can stay clear of being injured next season and really prove that Gold, David Sullivan and Manuel Pellegrini were correct in their decision to sign him on a free transfer. Wilshere is a good player and everyone knows that, it’s just a real shame that these injury issues keep holding him back. West Ham did offer a lot of money to the midfielder though. £100,000-a-week for someone who made just eight appearances is pretty ridiculous. At least the Irons did not have to shell out a transfer fee to snap up the former Arsenal star.
