Sir Alex Ferguson wanted Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino to become the permanent manager at Manchester United instead of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, according to the Daily Mail.
The outlet report that Ferguson is believed to have felt that Manchester United should have being trying to get the best available manager for the job, which it is thought the former Manchester United boss felt Pochettino was when Jose Mourinho left the club during the season.
Pochettino has performed excellently at Tottenham this season guiding the club into the top four in the Premier League, and also managing to get the club to the Champions League final, while after a promising start Solksjaer could only lead Manchester United to a sixth place finish.
OPINION
It is interesting that Ferguson felt that Pochettino was the right manager to take over on a permanent basis from Mourinho at Manchester United this season. It is also very easy to see why the former Manchester United boss believes that the Argentine was the best available option for United when they sacked Mourinho, given Tottenham’s remarkable progress in recent seasons. Pochettino has transformed Spurs into regular members of the Premier League’s top four, and ensured the clubs place in the Champions League once again next season despite not making a single signing in either transfer window this campaign. Tottenham could also secure their maiden Champions League trophy after reaching the competitions final in Madrid where they will face Liverpool. Spurs supporters will be glad that Manchester United elected to appoint Solksjaer as their next permanent manager and did not make a move, as Ferguson wanted, for Pochettino. It would have been interesting to see what would have happened if United had made a serious bid to get the Argentine this season, but thankfully for Tottenham they did not make the move.
