PLZ Soccer pundit Barry Ferguson believes that Rangers have bagged themselves a “good young player” in Jake Hastie after it was confirmed that the Motherwell attacker will head to Ibrox in the summer transfer window.

Motherwell announced via their official website on Wednesday that Hastie, 20, will join Rangers after agreeing a pre-contract deal to head to Ibrox.

Hastie’s existing deal at Fir Park is due to expire at the end of the season and after showing an incredible run of form since the winter break, Ferguson just hopes that he can continue getting regular first team football in Glasgow.

“He’s been put in a pretty difficult situation there,” Ferguson told PLZ Soccer when discussing Hastie’s recent interview, as shown on YouTube [13:19 onwards]. “It looks as if it’s 99.9 per cent done. Rangers have got themselves a good young player, let’s know beat about the bush here.

“For me since Christmas he has been great for Motherwell.

“It’s just where he’s going to go there [Ibrox] and play week in, week out.

“I would love him to go there and play, I love seeing young kids go and play football.”

Ferguson is correct to be concerned about how much Hastie will play for Rangers next season. As good as the attacker has looked for Motherwell since the winter break, he needs to show that he can sustain that form when playing for a club going for the title and over a much longer period of time. At Fir Park there is a lot less pressure to succeed and moving to Ibrox will be full of challenges for Hastie, because he is not guaranteed to start for Rangers next season. It might be a very good idea for Steven Gerrard to send Hastie back on loan to Motherwell or to a club that is higher up the Scottish Premiership standings like Kilmarnock. Jordan Jones is heading to Ibrox in the summer and will be competing with Hastie for a spot in Gerrard’s side. Killie will surely take Hastie on loan if the opportunity arises and they are clearly a club that have been run well lately. It will be a massive shame if Hastie struggles for football with Rangers.
