Man United legend Rio Ferdinand has put aside his rivalries to send a Twitter message hailing Man City legend Vincent Kompany.

The veteran defender produced an absolute wonder strike to win the game against Leicester at the Etihad, just as it looked like his side might stumble in the title race.

Man City had huffed and puffed against Leicester, but the visitors had held strong and produced a few danger moments themselves.

The game was still 0-0 in the 70th minute when Kompany picked the ball up about 30 yards out and thundered the ball into the top corner of the net.

Ferdinand sent a message on Tuesday morning saying, “Let’s just put rivalries aside for a moment and tip ya hat to Vincent Kompany. Big moment. Huge goal. Top player. Produced when needed.”

OPINION

Fair play to Ferdinand. It can’t be easy for Man United fans at the moment, with their own side in serious disarray and Man City and Liverpool walking away with things at the top of the table. It looked for all the world like Man City were going to stumble in the game yesterday. Leicester were brilliant at times, keeping the attacking talent of City at bay and threatening on the counter. They had a couple of chances to score but didn’t take them and after Kompany came up with his wonderstrike there was no way back for them. The goal from Kompany just gets better and better the more we watch it. It’s simply unstoppable and swerves away from the keeper into the top-right corner of the net. That’s a goal that you’re going to see over and over again this summer.
