Manchester United are looking at Newcastle’s breakthrough star Sean Longstaff, according to Sky Sports journalist Keith Downie.

He made the claim on his personal Twitter account on Friday morning.

The 21-year-old broke through into the Newcastle first-team this season and put in a strong of really impressive performances before suffering a season-ending injury.

Longstaff is under contract until 2022 at St James’ Park.

OPINION

We’re expecting a busy summer at Old Trafford and it looks like they’re going to try and do things a bit different under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. They’ve also been linked with a move for Swansea winger Dan James and with Longstaff on their radar too it looks like they’re going to start building for the future by mopping up some of the best young talent in Britain. Longstaff is definitely in that category. He was brilliant for Newcastle this season and was really unfortunate to pick up an injury after a run of eight consecutive starts in the Premier League. He will definitely be seen as a player for next season at Newcastle and they won’t want to lose him. One thing in Newcastle’s favour is that Man United aren’t quite the draw they were. But they’re still Man United and if they’re serious about landing him and can make assurances about his game-time it must be tempting. However, those assurances might be tough. We can’t see Longstaff getting in the first-team straight away and he may well think that his future is best served – at least in the short-term – by staying put. Newcastle’s fans will definitely be hoping that’s the case.
