Chelsea defender David Luiz has said that he is to reveal whether he is to stay at the club in the coming days.

The Brazilian international, who helped guide the Blues past Eintracht Frankfurt to the Europa League final, is out of contract this summer and has been in talks throughout the season over an extension to his deal.

Speaking to Sky Sports News via their Transfer Centre [Friday, 12:21], Luiz revealed that he will be able to confirm to the world his plans for next season before the showpiece final in Baku on May 29.

“Yes I think so,” the 32-year-old said when asked if he will stay at Chelsea. “Soon everybody is going to know. It will be before the Europa League final, in five days.

“I love this club. My great moments in football were here, especially the European titles – the Champions League and Europa League.

“My relation with the fans has always been great since the first day I played here. I just try to do my best and make them happy. Nobody wants to play in an empty stadium when you have an opportunity to understand that we play for them.”

OPINION

This is fantastic news for Chelsea. Despite the England international only making eight appearances this term, it was always going to be important for the Blues that Gary Cahill’s departure did not hit them too hard. One way to do that is to keep hold of David Luiz, who looked for all the world like he was set to leave Chelsea for a second time in his career. But the good news for Chelsea fans is that Luiz looks like he will be announcing his decision via social media and, in any case, it is good that Luiz has come out and spoken about his future in this way. After a tense penalty shootout victory over Frankfurt on Thursday night, this is a great way to settle the nerves of Blues fans. What it certainly does is leaves no speculation surrounding Luiz’s future ahead of the Europa League final, which will be a moral booster for Maurizio Sarri’s side.
