Darren Bent has suggested that the unnamed club who Danny Rose revealed allegedly enquired into his mental health state ahead of proposed transfer last summer have behaved poorly.

Tottenham left-back Rose opened up about his struggles with depression last year just before he flew out with the England squad for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, as reported by the Guardian.

The left-back has suggested that the unnamed club, who were engaging in talks with Tottenham ahead of a potential move last summer, wanted to check whether the defender was “crazy” before engaging in further discussions over signing the 28-year-old, according to Talksport.

Bent, who spent two years with Tottenham from 2007 to 2009, suggested that the unnamed club handled the situation badly and praised Rose for his handling of the situation.

“Danny Rose has been open enough to come out and speak about it, don’t punish him for it. It’s not a laughing matter,” Bent told Talksport.

“Fair play to Danny for not exposing the football club because I know a lot of people that would have because it’s just poor.”

“He’s been open enough to come out and speak about the problems he’s had, he’s had family tragedies, people probably didn’t know that and all these different topics, and yet someone needs to meet him to see if he’s crazy. It’s not about that, it’s about what he does on the football pitch.”

OPINION

Bent is right to praise Rose for the way he has handled opening up about the alleged incident with an unnamed club who were potentially looking to sign him last summer. The left-back was able to protect the club’s identity as well as raise awareness over the incident that happened, which might allow this kind of situation to not be repeated in future. Bent is also right to suggest that the club involved should have been focusing on what Rose could add to their team on the pitch, by analysing his performances rather than focusing on anything else. The England international has been a key performer for Tottenham this season, as Mauricio Pochettino’s side have reached the Champions League final in Madrid, and he would have been a very good addition to any other side in the Premier League or elsewhere this season. That just goes to highlight Bent’s point that club’s should only focus on what the player can give to them on the field rather than looking into what they are like off the field. Rose has handled the whole situation very well, and will be looking to help his side end the season on a high by helping Tottenham beat Liverpool in the Champions League final.
