OPINION

It hasn’t all been plain sailing for Riyad Mahrez during his first season at Manchester City. The Algerian has spent large spells of the campaign watching from the sidelines as his side have systematically laid waste to pretty much everybody they have come across. When he has played, displays have been mixed, and for every flash of brilliance, there has been a frustrating moment for the winger. That’s part of the issue with playing for this City team. The standards are so high that even the slightest drop beneath that level can lead to a barrage of criticism from a fanbase that has come to expect non-stop success. On Saturday afternoon, however, Mahrez was fantastic. Trusted by Pep Guradiola to start the FA Cup final against Watford, he had an absolute field day against Jose Holebas out on the flank, and it seemed as if every time he got the ball, his first thought was to get at the defender. Time after time he had him in toast, and the Greek must have been pleased to see the City forward’s number go up halfway through the second half. By that point the damage was already done, however, and even though he didn’t play the full 90, make no mistake, Mahrez was a key part of City’s 6-0 demolition of the Hornets.
