Rangers are surely at risk of missing out on signing Charlton Athletic midfielder Joe Aribo as it has now been reported that Aston Villa have taken the lead in the race to sign him.

Goal previously reported that the Gers were keen on signing the 22-year-old and that they were battling alongside many teams to get him with him looking an attractive prospect to buy as his contract is set to expire in June.

However it seems there has been an update in the race to sign him and it makes it sound like the Gers are at risk of missing out on Aribo.

The Sun reported on Saturday that Aston Villa had jumped to the head of the queue for the midfielder with Aribo looking likely to leave the Addicks when his contract expires.

Given that the Villans seem to have joined the race late, they weren’t mentioned by Goal, and the fact they have blitzed past all their competition with ease it sounds likely they will wrap up a deal.

This is especially the case when you consider that they could be playing in the English Premier League if they beat Derby in the play-off final on Monday as that’s bound to make them a tempting prospect for Aribo.

It will be a disappointing blow to Steven Gerrard’s side if he misses out on the 22-year-old as by all accounts the midfielder is exactly what they need.

Aribo is an attack-minded midfielder who could be the creative spark in the middle that the Gers lack as he is capable of scoring and assisting chances.

This is shown by the fact he has scored 10 goals, while assisting five, in the 38 appearances he has made for the club this season.

In fact the 22-year-old is so useful going forward, he was involved in 19% of Charlton’s league goals in their 2018/19 campaign (Source: Transfermarkt).

So when you consider that and the fact Aribo is on course to be a bargain with his contract expiring, as an in-form English 22-year-old would normally cost a ludicrous amount, the Gers look like disappointingly missing out.
