Ian Holloway heaped praise on Aston Villa midfielder John McGinn for his display during the 2-1 win over Derby on Monday.

The former QPR manager stated that the 24-year-old midfielder was absolutely sensational against the Rams before suggesting that the Villans had grabbed a bargain when they signed him last summer.

Holloway did this by sharing his disbelief over how the Villans had only paid £2million to Hibernian for his services, although it’s worth noting the midfielder actually cost a little more as the Times reported it was £2.75million.

“He’s been absolutely sensational,” said Holloway on talkSPORT (Monday May 27th, 16:15).

“How they got him for £2million…what a signing.”

OPINION

Holloway is spot-on to suggest McGinn was a bargain, even if he is a little wrong over the player’s price tag. The 24-year-old midfielder not only wowed in the play-off final against the Rams, but shone bright across the whole of his 2018/19 campaign. McGinn featured a total of 48 times for the Villans and scored an impressive nine goals, with one coming in the play-off final, as well as racked up 12 assists. Hopefully the midfielder is able to continue impressing for the club when stepping up a level to feature in the Premier League next season. While no player is a guaranteed success in England’s top-flight, McGinn does look like having the skills needed to do well next season. If McGinn does wow in the Premier League next season, then his 2018 price tag will look even more like a bargain. This is because wowing in the Premier League dramatically inflates a player’s price tag and you have to wonder how much he could possibly cost come next summer.
