Darren Gough sarcastically said it was a shock that Aston Villa attacker Anwar El Ghazi had his red card from the 1-1 draw with Leeds United overturned.

The FA confirmed on Tuesday that the red card awarded to the 23-year-old had been rescinded and that he will now be available for the club’s next three matches.

Adrian Durham read the FA’s decision regarding El Ghazi to Gough and he responded by sarcastically giving a one-word verdict on the news to reveal his lack of surprise.

“Shock,” said Gough on talkSPORT (16:39, Tuesday April 30th).

OPINION

Is anyone surprised that El Ghazi’s red card was overturned? Surely not. The winger was wrongly sent off for violent conduct after clashing with Bamford as the Leeds forward seemed to feign injury and pretend like the Villa player had hit him. It’s unclear why the Leeds forward acted in such a way, as it was just an embarrassing sight to see. However El Ghazi can’t worry about that now, as justice has been effectively served. The 23-year-old winger has the potential to be a key player for Dean Smith’s sides in the upcoming play-offs and it’s good see his recent momentum won’t be disrupted by a spell on the sidelines. The winger has been inconsistent across the board this season but when he is at his best, he is a lethal force going forward and can help carve out chances for the Villans’ forwards to fire home. El Ghazi has scored five goals, while assisting six, this season and could easily build on those numbers if the club sign him on a permanent basis in the summer.
