Celtic midfielder Callum McGregor has revealed he has been blown away by the performances of Rangers namesake Allan McGregor after voting for the shot stopper as player of the season.

The Gers brought the goalkeeper back to Ibrox from Hull City and he has been a mainstay in Steven Gerrard’s side, keeping the likes of Wes Foderingham watching on from the sidelines.

With the Scottish season coming to an end, Celtic’s McGregor admitted he had voted for the Rangers veteran as his player of the season, heralding the impact he has had at his Glasgow rivals.

He told the Daily Record: “I just think Allan has been outstanding. There were so many moments when he was keeping Rangers in it in Europe with massive saves. His experience has been massive, bringing that team together.

“He was as good a candidate as anyone – and his name is McGregor! I really don’t know what the perception of that will be (a Celtic player voting for a Rangers player) but you can only be fair and recognise talent.

“If someone has had a good season, I don’t know why you shouldn’t vote for them.”

Opinion

You just know that Rangers fans are going to look at this and bring up how obsessed Celtic are with their side. Joking aside, McGregor – the Hoops star – is absolutely right to applaud what the Rangers ace has done this season. He has been absolutely magnificent between the sticks and you can be sure that if he was not there to marshal his defence and keep the opposition at bay as effectively as he has done, Rangers would be a lot worse off. He has won Gerrard and his men points all by himself with his impressive displays and you can see why Rangers thought it a good idea to bring him back last summer. Forget the controversy of a Celtic player voting for a Rangers man – this is one excellent footballer recognising the impact of another. There have been some top quality performers in Scotland this season and you might well see a wide spread of votes across all the candidates.
