Boyd backs Moyes for Celtic

|

Kris Boyd has claimed that David Moyes would be a “good fit” for the permanent boss’ job at Celtic.

The Hoops have been under the management of Neil Lennon since Brendan Rodgers left for Leicester City, but Boyd does not believe he will be given the full-time gig at Parkhead.

Writing in a column for the Scottish Sun, he said: “For me, Neil Lennon isn’t going to get the job. If he was then I think that would have been announced long before now.

“It’s going to be fascinating to see how things pan out but I still think David Moyes will be in with a shout of getting it.

“Some Celtic supporters have been living in a kind of fantasy land in the last few months with some of the names they have been talking about.

“Jose Mourinho isn’t coming to Scotland — and neither is Rafa Benitez. Moyes is a far more realistic target and I think he’d be a good fit for what’s required there. Right now he needs them as much as they need him, so it could be the ideal time for all involved.”

OPINION

This is what has been needed for some time now; a measure of levelheadedness in the discussion on a new manager at Parkhead. Boyd is right – you have to worry for Neil Lennon’s chances at this point – and if the club are going to swing the axe this summer, then who better to take the reins than Moyes? The former Manchester United manager has endured a bit of a drubbing in recent years after a series of unsuccessful gigs, but he went some way to restoring his ailing reputation with his firefighting job at West Ham last season, and could probably feel justifiably aggrieved not to be given the hot seat in East London this term. That being said, the Hammers’ loss could be Celtic’s gain. Moyes would be the ideal man for the job at Parkhead. He is a talented manager who loves nothing more than a long term project he can really sink his teeth into, and as Boyd rightly says, his reputation could do with some restoration as well, meaning that he won’t be going anywhere any time soon. If Lennon is to go, Moyes should replace him.
