Aston Villa won their way back into the Premier League in the very best way possible – going through the play-offs 2-1 at Derby’s expense at Wembley on Monday.

There were plenty of Villa players who performed heroics but fans flocked onto Twitter to praise John McGinn after a tireless all-round display that included the second, and ultimately winning, goal of the game.

The goal itself was more down to a howler from Derby keeper Kelle Roos, who tried to let the ball drop into this hands, only to see McGinn get a head on it and guide it into an empty net, but the Villa fans didn’t care.

The midfielder joined Villa from Hibs in the summer for £2.79million, but he might have been  celebrating Celtic’s treble-treble instead if the Scottish champions hadn’t prevaricated over his price.

They must be gutted now but their loss is Aston Villa’s gain and McGinn helped his side back into the Premier League with a solid game after a very solid season.

McGinn played 40 games in the Championship, scoring six and adding 10 assists. But none of the goals were as valuable as the one today, with Aston Villa needing the second after Derby and Jack Marriott pulled one back with ten minutes to go.

Here are the best reactions from Aston Villa fans to their midfield hero:
