Ajax have sent a Twitter message to Tottenham’s Jan Vertonghen after the Champions League semi-final between the two sides.

Spurs completed an incredible comeback on Wednesday night after going three goals behind on aggregate by half-time.

Three goals from Lucas Moura in the second-half meant they went through on away goals, leading the official Ajax Twitter account to post a tweet saying their hearts were broken.

Former Ajax player Jan Vertonghen posted a message on Thursday saying, “Emotional night in Amsterdam. Was great to be back playing at the Johan Cruyff Arena.”

The Ajax Twitter account responded with a simple three-word message: “You’re world class”.

Vertonghen signed for Tottenham from Ajax in 2012.

OPINION

Very classy from Ajax. Their players were devastated after losing in the manner they did, after having one foot in the final at half-time on Wednesday. Moura was sensational, scoring three when Tottenham looked dead and buried, and Tottenham will now face Liverpool in the final in Madrid. Vertonghen came up through the youth ranks at Ajax and spent 10 years there as a pro, so Wednesday night was extra special for him, and he’ll appreciate getting a message from his first club. Incredibly, Arsenal and Chelsea will contest the Europa League final, making it the first time the two competitions have been contested by four teams from the same country. It leaves Tottenham just 90 minutes away from getting the trophy hoodoo off their backs in the most sensational way possible. Jurgen Klopp’s men stand between them and European glory in a night that promises to showcase the very best of the English game.
