Southampton are interested in giving Rangers midfielder Scott Arfield a speedy return to the Premier League, according to the Mirror.

The newspaper claim on their website that the Saints’ director of football operations, Ross Wilson, who worked with Arfield during their shared spell at Falkirk, is keen on securing a reunion with the Canadian international at St. Mary’s.

Arfield joined the Gers on a free transfer from Burnley last summer, but the Mirror’s report suggests that he could be the subject of a £3 million swoop at the end of the season.

OPINION

This would be a real blow for the Gers. Arfield has easily been one of Rangers’ best and most consistent players this season, and losing him after just one year would be a massive shame. This was always going to be the gamble for Rangers signing a player like Arfield though. In some ways it’s a real catch 22. If he doesn’t perform then you’ve signed a flop, if he does then you risk having him stolen away from you in the manner being reported. Obviously, this is just a rumour, and nothing may come of it, but it could also prove to be a perfect illustration of the reasons why Scottish teams are still struggling to progress substantially. Replacing Arfield would be no mean feat, and the only hope will be that if he does leave, the Gers can command enough of a fee to bring in decent reinforcements.
