Aston Villa manager Dean Smith has issued a defiant statement over the future of Jack Grealish as he says there is “an awful lot” to keep him at his boyhood club.

The English maestro has been one of the Villans’ top players this season as the club look to reach their second successive playoff final, looking to go a step better than they did last year when they were beaten by Fulham.

Claiming that it is inevitable there will be much interest in his star man in the transfer window, Smith was adamant that there were a number of factors which could see Grealish remain in the midlands instead of moving.

Speaking at his press conference ahead of the club’s clash against Leeds, he told the Birmingham Mail: “It would be crazy if we didn’t get bids for him. But he has committed his future to the club.

“He has a long-term contract and he’s a Villa fan. He is captain of the club now as well. There are an awful lot of things to keep him at this club for.”

Opinion

Yes, Villa might be Grealish’s boyhood club and yes, he might have a long term contract, but if Smith and his men do not seal Premier League football this season then their hopes of keeping him on board will be dead in the water. Grealish no doubt realises that he is at a stage of his career where he needs to be making a big name for himself at the very top, otherwise he might never hits the heights he, and so many others believe he can. That means playing in the Premier League and while he would no doubt love to do that with Villa, he cannot wait around forever to see them back among England’s elite. This season will determine where he ends up and if he is not staying at Villa then he is heading to one of the best clubs in the country. He has the ability and has shown an improved maturity too. Loyalty only runs so deep and the Villans cannot expect him to stick around for much longer if they do not match his ambitions.
