Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has been left blown away by the defensive performance of Paul Dummett after he helped the club to a 3-1 win over Southampton on Saturday.

The Magpies secured their place in the Premier League for next season courtesy of a hat trick from Ayoze Perez, who stole the headlines for Rafael Benitez’s men.

However, in choosing his team of the week, Shearer chose to herald Dummett alongside the man who got the goals, singling out his defensive contribution as crucial to victory.

Writing about the Welsh international and the Spanish hat trick hero on the Premier League’s official website, the St James’ Park legend said: “(On Dummett) Immense in his defensive duties, making a number of crucial clearances and interceptions.

“(On Perez) A first hat-trick for the Toon and a deserved match ball. He ran the Saints ragged.”

Opinion

Some might accuse Shearer of wearing his black and white tinted spectacles when it comes to his team of the week decision at times but this is a well warranted inclusion for the Newcastle pair. Perez’s place in the XI was almost guaranteed after his impressive treble of goals but it is a team sport and Dummett’s performance at the other end of the pitch was almost as important in sealing victory. It is not the first time the defender, who has been filling in as a centre back despite being a natural left back, has been one of the standout performers for Newcastle and it is quite clear as to why he is a favourite of manager Rafael Benitez. He gives absolutely everything for his boyhood club and while he might not be the most technically gifted of players, the Toon Army cannot fault his dedication to the cause.
