AC Milan chief executive Ivan Gazidis is a huge fan of Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino and is keen on taking him to the San Siro as a potential replacement for Gennaro Gattuso, according to journalist Stefano Agresti.

The Calcio Mercato reporter, one of the most reputed writers at the Italian publication, claimed in an interview with Radio Sportiva that the AC Milan chief is a fond admirer of the Argentine and the job he has done in north London, but recognises his desire to secure his arrival from Spurs is an ambitious goal.

Asked about Pochettino joining the Serie A outfit, he was quoted on Radio Sportiva‘s website as saying: “In England he is doing well and Gazidis really likes him. It is clear that it is not an easy operation due to the hiring and the important ambitions that he has.”

Opinion

AC Milan might be a big name in the history of European football but they are not the massive giants they once used to be and so it would be a shock were Pochettino to leave north London, where he is with a side in the Champions League quarter finals, to join a club who sit fourth in Italy’s top flight and were knocked out of the Europa League at the group stages, with Real Betis and Olympiakos beating them to a top two finish to progress. Could Pochettino see the Italians as a project, aiming to turn them back into the heavyweights of world football they once were? Perhaps, but not until he has finished his job at Tottenham, which feels as though it has a few more years in it anyway. If Pochettino is to depart, it is for a club at a level above, not below, where Spurs sit right now, leaving Gazidis facing a losing battle should he push for his arrival at the San Siro.
