Wigan Athletic midfielder Nick Powell will not be signing for any Scottish sides this summer, Rangers included, according to reliable journalist Alan Nixon.

The former Manchester United man had been linked with a move to Ibrox in a report from the Scottish Sun back in January, with his current contract in England set to run out at the end of the season.

But Nixon has disputed this claim, suggesting via his personal Twitter that the seven goal ace will not be moving north of the border.

OPINION

Powell would have been a quality signing for Rangers, but Nixon seems fairly convinced that it isn’t meant to be for Steven Gerrard’s side. The former Manchester United man never really lived up to his potential at Old Trafford, but he was young, and he has done a fine job of establishing himself as one of the most consistent central midfielders in the lower leagues since he left Manchester. Powell offers a real goal threat and a battling mentality in the centre of the park, and he would have been the ideal, creative, combative force needed to give the Gers a real boost. Just because a journalist has said it won’t happen doesn’t mean that it is written in stone, of course, but Nixon has a pretty admirable record with this kind of thing, and generally speaking he can be trusted. Rangers may still try, but it won’t be easy to persuade Powell to Ibrox.
