Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has continued the war of words between his side and fierce Glasgow rivals Celtic after their Old Firm clash over the weekend.

The Hoops came out on top 2-1 in what was a heated derby day, Rangers seeing two men sent off and Ryan Kent facing a retrospective ban all for incidents involving Bhoys midfielder Scott Brown.

Both sets of players and managers have been speaking out about the behaviour of their counterparts and Gerrard has continued to have his say, insisting that the likes of Neil Lennon were playing “victim” in the whole situation.

He told the Daily Record: “Neil Lennon will say what Neil Lennon wants to say. His assistant will say whatever he wants to say. If they want to play the victim card, that’s up to them.

“Celtic are entitled to celebrate – the supporters, the club and the individual players. That’s fine. We haven’t got a problem with that at all. We’re on the end of it this time. There’s one more Old Firm left we’re looking forward to and we need to make sure the result is different to the one we’ve just been involved in.

“I’ve got no problem with Celtic celebrating. How will the players react? I know what I’d do. We can’t really control what’s going on with other people’s reactions on social media and how they celebrate. All we can do is soak it up, accept it and move on to the next challenge – but remember it.”

Opinion

There is nothing like a Glasgow derby to ignite the fires and have everyone talking for weeks on end. With games coming up for both sides, you would think that the focus would turn to them but you would be wrong. It was one of the fiercest, most volatile derby days that the two sides have seen in recent years, with players losing their heads and unfortunately some unsavoury scenes in the stands too. The vitriol which lies between these two huge clubs is absolutely huge and no one seems as though they want to stop inciting the other side with their words. It is what makes the Old Firm one of the most revered derbies in world football and with big names like Steven Gerrard involved as a manager, you know the attention is only going to grow and grow. As for his comments, he cannot hide the fact he is pretty riled up and you can expect a reaction from his Gers team in upcoming games.
