Barry Ferguson has suggested that Alfredo Morelos would only be worth around £10 million should he leave in the transfer window.

Rangers managing director Stewart Robertson has previously stated that the club will look for a fee of around £20 million for their hitman, in line with what Celtic received for Moussa Dembele when he joined Lyon last summer, as reported in the Scottish Sun.

But former Ibrox man Ferguson believes that the Colombian is worth just half of that figure.

Speaking on PLZ Soccer, as quoted in the Scottish Sun, he said: “Yeah exactly, you just took the words out of my mouth.

“They got Morelos in for I think £1million. In the market what is he worth? £8million? Touching £10million?

“So that’s the kind of market Rangers are looking at. Guys who can come in do well and sell on and make a good profit on it and put back into the first team squad.”

OPINION

This will not sit well with Rangers fans at all. Few will want to see Morelos leave for £20 million, and even fewer would want to see him go for half of that amount. Morelos has hit 29 goals in all competitions, a fearsome return, and certainly one that would take some replacing. Increasingly, however, you can’t help feeling that he might not be a top, top level player. His goalscoring is immense, yes, but football is about so much more than on-field exploits, and unless he can learn to curb his disciplinary issues, it’s hard to see how he could have a future in one of the elite leagues in Europe. Five red cards this season, including three against Aberdeen alone, is unacceptable, and will put a significant dint in any valuation that a potential suitor has of him. Perhaps he would be less volatile when he didn’t have to play the Dons four or five times a year  but that’s a big gamble to take, and until he learns to keep his emotions in check, both him and the Gers will suffer.
