Former Rangers player Alex Rae admitted that he was glad to see Lee Wallace have a short cameo in the 2-0 win over Aberdeen on Sunday.

The 31-year-old has only made two appearances in the Scottish Premiership this season, but boss Steven Gerrard handed the defender a three minute cameo when he came on to replace Jermain Defoe in the 87th minute.

Rae also praised the way in which the Gers’ supporters reacted to Wallace coming onto the pitch after James Tavernier scored two penalties to deny Celtic the title for yet another week.

“Good to see Lee Wallace get the last few mins today and the @RangersFC fans giving him a warm reception,” he said on his personal Twitter account.

OPINION

Wallace has been vastly overlooked by Gerrard this season, which is why he has not really appeared for the club for the entirety of the campaign before this match. He used to be a club legend not long ago, but he has since fallen down the pecking order for the left-back spot, which is actually a real shame. However, the team has progressed, and unfortunately, he has been left behind in that respect. It was good to hear that he still got a warm reception from the supporters though, which indicates that they have not forgotten what he has achieved for them in the past. He still has the talent to do well, but that clearly is not going to be at Rangers any time soon. There is no way that he is going to force his way in to Gerrard’s plans next season, so it would not be a surprise to see him leave this summer.
