Former Celtic hero Johan Mjallby has admitted that he would be keen to return to the club as Neil Lennon’s assistant.

The Swede established himself as a favourite at Parkhead during his playing days before spending a four year stint as Lennon’s right hand man during his first spell at the helm in Glasgow.

And Mjallby has revealed that he would jump at the chance to join up with his former teammate again, should he land the full time job.

Speaking on Si Ferry’s Open Goal, he said: “It doesn’t matter if it is as a manager or coach. I am not interested in a gig in Sweden.

“It’s not I am talking down Swedish football, but I’ve lost a little bit of motivation being in Sweden for the last three years.”

When asked if he would go back to Celtic, he added: “Oh most definitely yes.”

OPINION

If Lennon does get the top job at Celtic then it would make an awful lot of sense if he moved to bring Mjallby back. The two enjoyed great successes at Parkhead, both as players and coaches, and it would be a natural move for them to try and rekindle that partnership. They clearly know each other inside out, they clearly respect each other, and it could be the boost Lennon needs to get his side firing again. The Hoops have looked a little sluggish at times under his tutelage, but if he were able to get a first rate team around him and really build for a new campaign, perhaps that could be the spark to ignite the fuse that could see them dominating sides again. Mjallby has always been popular with the green half of Glasgow, and for a club so focussed on their history, you get the impression that the more legends well-versed in what it means to win things for the club they have involved, the better that would be.
