Bain: As long as we’re champions

Celtic goalkeeper Scott Bain has admitted that he doesn’t care how the Hoops finish their season, as long as they finish as champions.

The Bhoys are currently nine points clear of second-placed Rangers, with an eighth successive title seemingly assured, but have drawn their last two league matches 0-0 in wholly uninspiring performances, met recently against Hibernian on Sunday.

Bain has disputed any suggestion of a dip in form, however, and has claimed that the priority is lifting silverware, no matter how it is achieved.

As quoted in the Daily Record, he said: “I honestly do not care how we finish – as long as we finish as champions.

“It’s not really difficult mentally when there are people who think it’s already over. You can see from our form since the turn of the year we go into every game like a final.

“We wanted to win against Hibs and it was frustrating that we didn’t. But we had chances to get the points, so it wasn’t really a bad performance.”

OPINION

Bain’s sentiments are solid, but the expression of them leave a bit to be desired. Yes, the priority should be winning the title, but it should also matter as to how that is achieved. The league is wrapped up, to all intents and purposes, but there is still room for improvement, and with every passing season it becomes more and more vital for the Hoops to make a step forward. We saw it this year with the bright start Rangers had. Up until January, the title race was firmly in the balance, and had it not been for a bit of a capitulation on their part, it could be a very different story. Celtic cannot afford to just put their feet up. Maybe they’ve had it too easy for too long, or maybe winning breeds a creeping sense of apathy, but it is important that standards don’t slip, or they might struggle to make it nine in a row.
